Teddy Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States, is one of my personal heroes. It’s not so much his politics that I admire, but his appetite for living life to its fullest. He didn’t let childhood asthma get in his way; in fact, he led a more strenuous life because of his ailment, just to prove that he could.

I, too, try to live my life to the fullest each day and have a love of adventuring in the great outdoors. Unfortunately, as I’ve aged all of my outdoor activities have really done a number on my joints. Rather than simply push through the knee pain as Roosevelt might have, I’ve followed the advice of my doctor and now take a joint health supplement. The supplements have helped protect healthy cartilage in my joints, which will hopefully afford me a long life full of grand adventures of the type that my favorite president may have enjoyed.

Joint deterioration is a major concern as we grow older. While exercise and a healthy diet can help prolong their health, its often necessary to take supplements for knee pain and other joint problems. With the surfeit of products now being peddled online and in retail outlets, it can be difficult to obtain objective information on which supplements are the best. Here are some recommendations from Jonathon Cluett, M.D., of

~Glucosamine: an amino acid found naturally in the body. It may promote the creation of new cartilage.

~Chondroitin: often used in conjunction with glucosamine, it helps to build and preserve cartilage.

~MSM: also known as methylsulfonylmethane, it is believed to promote healthy ligaments.
