Knee Trauma

A knee injury can lead to post-traumatic knee arthritis.  A break in the tibia, fibula, or femur may damage the joint surface and lead to arthritis years after the injury. It depends on the severity of the injury.  Meniscal tears and ligament injuries can lead to an unstable knee joint, and additional wear on the cartilage, which can result in arthritis as the months and years pass.


Laying Leg Raises

Laying leg raises make it easier for someone with knee arthritis to stand in a steady position for extended periods of time. This exercise can be performed with a yoga mat on the floor or flat on a firm bed.
Lie on your back.   Plant one foot flat with the knee bent to provide stability while exercising the opposite leg. Lift your other leg off the floor while keeping your knee straight. You should try and keep your heel 12 to 18 inches off the bed. Hold this position for 7-10 seconds. This strengthens the hip flexor muscles as well as the muscles surrounding the knee. This exercise should be done until fatigue sets in and you should stop immediately if any pain is felt.

Doctors and physical therapists both agree that increasing the strength of the anatomy surrounding your knee arthritis will help improve function and decrease pain.  The hamstrings are an important part of that anatomy.  Keeping your hamstrings loose and strong will help a lot!

One way to strengthen your hamstrings is with a hamstring curl.  These exercises can be performed with weights, an exercise ball or with a large elastic strap.  Check with your doctor or therapist to see if including hamstring curls in your strength training regiment is right for you.



Acetaminophen is commonly used to relieve fevers, headaches, and minor aches and pains. It is a major ingredient in many cold and flu remedies. It is also used as a short term solution to treat mild knee arthritis. However it has no effect on the underlying inflammation, redness, and joint swelling.

Acetaminophen works by elevating the body’s pain threshold. It relieves pain by requiring the body to produce a greater amount of it before the pain is felt. Current recommendations for treating pain suggest that acetaminophen may be taken for up to 10 days. If symptoms persist, a doctor needs to be consulted to see if acetaminophen use should continue.

Knee arthritis is one of the most common illnesses among aging individuals particularly those over the age of 65. Depending on the type, arthritis may be caused by different factors such as; joint infection, or age. And among the most common types of such diseases are the following:

-Rheumatoid Arthritis
-Septic Arthritis
-Still’s Disease

Each type may show different symptoms, but there has been significant advances in joint health supplements that can work to combat the degenerative effects.
