Thumb Pain

March 5, 2012

Where is the most common site for degenerative arthritis?  The thumb.  Injury or repetitive stress can cause CMC arthritis.  But most of the time the condition just develops for no specific reason.

CMC arthritis effects the Carpometacarpal joint of the thumb. It is very painful.

The good news is that conservative treatments like physical therapy and a thumb splint can be very effective.  By positioning the thumb joint correctly, pain can be reduced and function increased.

Nobody likes to wear a brace.  However a brace for CMC Arthritis doesn’t need to be big and clunky.  All it has to do is position the thumb not restrict movement or provide protection.
